OBITUARY
The death has occurred at Wellington of Senior-Sergeant of Police Donald Austin, holder of the King’s Police Medal. He gained his award by rescuing a woman from drowning in the Waikato River, running 200 yards before plunging into the water.
Born at Purua 51 years ago, SeniorSergeant Austin was the fourth son of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. Austin. After receiving his education at the Purua School, he worked on the home farm until 20 years of age, when he took up bush felling. After three years of this work he left New Zealand for Australia, but returned after a short time. Coming to Whangarei to enlist for service in the war of 1914-18, SeniorSergeant Austin was rejected. In April, 1916, he joined the police force, being stationed successively at Invercargill, Greymouth, Dunedin, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Wellington, where his death occurred. In 1918 he married Miss Francis Nash, of Whangarei.
Senior-Sergeant Austin is survived by his wife, three daughters, one of whom won the Empire Overseas Exhibition for 1942 for excellence in the violin, and three sons, the eldest of whom has been serving in the armed forces overseas for the last three and a-half years. Senior-Sergeant Austin has four relatives in Northland.
