Bay Hospital Rates
KAIKOHE, This Day. General dissatisfaction regarding the hospital rates resulted in a deputation from the Kaikohe Town Board meeting the Prime Minister in lire course of his visit to the North. The chairman of the town board (Mr. G. S. Penneyt stated that about two months ago the Minister for Health had agreed to ease the burden of the ratepayers. who were then paying 2'sd in the £. by raising the cost of beds in the Bay of Islands Hospital from 6/- to 9/-. The amount resulting from the extra 3/eharfied was to bo deducted from the sum usually required from the ratepayers, thus reducing their rates. This had been done, but a new building scheme had also been started, as it was found that a new men's ward was necessary at the Knwakawn Hospital. The Kaikohe Town Board area was then levied with a turthor £2OOO, which was to act as a nucleus for Hie building fund, and this, notwithstanding the deduction brought about by the increased cost of hospital beds, had brought the rates up to 3d in the £. The Prime Minister promised the deputation that he would inquire into the matter on his return to Wellington.
