Auckland’s Poor Showing
(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day. A statement ihai th<* result of the 1948 Appeal Commit tee’s efforts to raise funds on capital, plus reserves basis, from ill.business community had been disappointing, was made by Mr F. N. Ambler at a meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Pal riot ic Commit tee. An appeal had been made 10 public bodies, trading firms and professional men and the general public. Public bodies had done well, but, with some exceptions, the? response from other sections had been poor. Mr Ambler said 3300 letters had been sent to commercial and professional men, and only 10 per cent had made donations. Of 500 large firms, with combined capital of £50.000,000, only 16G had responded, their donations totalling £41.000. Appeals had been made to 1200 professional men, and 45 had contributed. Letters had been sent to 80 hotel proprietors and there bad not been a single, response. One thousand Idlers had been sent ic reputedly wealthy citizens, with negligible result. The Salvation Army had made a house-to-house collection and had raised £2250. The average contribution Intd been about 9'Vd per house.
