Awanui Harbour Board

Among the matters discussed at the meeting of the Awanui Harbour Board this week, was whether or not the money at present on fixed deposit should be renewed for one or two years.

Some members pointed out that the two-year period gave a greater return in interest. Mr. W. Steed objected to tying up the money < £1000) for two years. “The aim of the Harbour Boarl should be to enlarge the wharf and shed as soon as the time is opportune, and that might be before the two years is up." he said. The chairman UVIT. L. Matthews) said that the funds were accumulating for just that purpose. The general opinion was that one year was long enough. Members visualised the need for wharf enlargement in tho not-too-distant future, and considered that the difference in amount of interest was more than compensated for by the availability of the money within a short time. Harbour Dues and Wharf Dues Tho Harbour Board has been much exercised over the fact that some boats are using the wharf without contributing to the wharf improvement rate in the form of harbour dues. All are paying wharf dues, through either the Dairy Company or Frankhanvs, but some shipping firms and ship-masters seemed to be in ignorance of the fact that a harbour due is also collectable. The secretary was instructed to make this known to the firms and ships concerned, and to have copies of the harbour boards' regulations placed in the wharf sheds.
