Safeguard Against War Ravage
WASHINGTON. August 21. The establishment of an American commission for the protection and salvage of artistic and historical monuments in Europe, under the chairmanship of Supreme Court Judge Owen Roberts, was announced by the State Department. The commission will furnish the army with museum and art experts as advisers "so that as far as is consistent with militaty necessity, works of cultural value may be protected in occupied countries.”The recovery of art objects from Axis leaders, and their return to the rightful owners, is also a function of the commission, which is eo-eperating with similar groups in other countries, : -
