“Commandos Strike At Dawn” Is Realistic

It. is not often that adult audiences applaud an action picture during its screening, but many of those who packed the Regent Theatre last night could not restrain themselves from showing then appreciation of “Commandos Strike at Dawn.” From a story by C. S. Forester, creator of Captain Horatio Horn blower, the picture is enriched by the interpretation by Paul Muni of a peaceful Norwegian student caught in the whirlpool of war and Nazi tyranny. The life of the coastal village, both before and after the coming of the invaders. Is faithfully presented, with many human touches and' not a little humour. Authenticity is fully preserved when a commando raid is staged by Canadian, British and Norwegian commandos, with the assistance of the navv. Sir Cedric Hardwicke takes the part of an admiral whose daughter, the beautiful Anna Lee. is attached to Muni, but apart from these and several other distinguished stars, the parts arc taken bv men of the services. It is because of this, and because cf the stirring scenes of hand-to-hand combat and the exceptionally fine photography that the beholder loses himself so completely and votes “Commandos Strike at Dawn” as one of the best offerings of the year. Appropriately enough the shorts include a newsreel of the United States Marine Corps in their latest Solomons-’ action.
