New Access Planned To Awanui Wharf

A request that the Awanui Harbour Beard surface the existing road to the dairy company’s wharf, but that as soon as possible a new road be made through harbour board property was made by a deputation front the dairy company to the Awanui Harbour Board at their monthly meeting on Wednesday. Mr. Bird, chairman of directors, spoke on behalf of the deputation. He said that the present access to the wharf had been made by the dairy company 17 years ago and the dairy company had maintained it ever since. The company had not worried about that, as they needed the road. Now the use of this road by others had increased enormously, and the congestion that resulted, plus the dust menace. had become a worry. They wanted to keep the dust away from ‘the factory, and to that end were engaged in an extensive concreting programme round the factory. The deputation asked that the harbour board metal the remainder of the road to reduce the dust as much as possible. He asked that in the near future a new road, through harbour board property, would be made, giving a fresh access to the wharf and allowing traffic without congestion. Mr. H. Parker endorsed Mr. Bird’s remarks. He pointed out that at present the traffic made the access road a very busy corner, with a sharp turn in. He considered that a new’ road in the place suggested would minimise the danger. “We promised the road, we have the money and if the road is now necessary we should get the work done as soon as possible,” said Mr. W. Hoskin. The dairy company promised the utmost co-operation in the use of the short stretch of roading that must pass over their property. The harbour board promised that as soon as the present lease for cropping had expired, and the weather was suitable. the new road would be made. In the meantime, the matter of surfacing the existing access road was to be treated as urgent.
