Hungarian Peace Envoy Vanishes

(Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, July 23. Turkish police are searching for an Hungarian envoy who is believed to have arrived in Ankara to contact Allied diplomats and discuss “peace with honour” plan for Hungary, says the Ankara correspondent of the “Evening Standard.” The plan, it is reported, proposes that Hungary would not resist Allied troops in the Balkans if it was decided to invade Europe from that side, providing the Allies gave Hungary favourable peace terms and allowed tier to keep some of her territorial gains. The Hungarian, agent, his mission concluded, vanished and cannot be traced. The police believe that German agents were chasing him. A special Turkish department which concentrates on detecting German, intrigues, is assisting in the search. Italian Peace Feelers The Italian Ambassador at Ankara (Guariglia) has been instructed by his Government to put out peace feelers -through Turkish Government, says the Ankara correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph.” It is believed in Ankara that Hitler’s visit to Mussolini was partly caused by a German fear that Italy might break from the Axis too soon. The Italian Government has begun a Press campaign tending to show that Italy must rely on her own resources as part of a propaganda plan to explain to the Italian people, as well as the rest of the world, the reason why Italy will be forced to break away. ! Goebbels Speaks In Parables “Europe is entering a decisive phase,” stated Goebbels’ weekly article in “Das Reich.” “What this means, our enemies will in due course realise to an extent which they will not welcome. We are facing further developments with calm composure. We have the longer arm. We hold the reins of victory. What it means will become clearer during further military operations.”
