Axis Spies In Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 22. The police announce the discovery of a German-Japanese spy ring at Sao Paulo with headquarters in a luxurious air-conditioned cellar, equipped with ultra-modern shortwave radio and microfilm laboratory with cameras for copying documents, also a laboratory for making secret inks. Materials for the laboratories are believed to have been brought in Axis diplomatic bags. The ringleader it is stated is Werner "VYalthem, who for a long time was a resident of Brazil. He has confessed attending a German army espionage school in 1939 and said he came' to Brazil oh the last plane of the Italian trans-Atlantic service to cross the Atlantic. Many other alleged agents have been arrested. All are German or Japanese and will face espionage charges for which they can be sentenced to death.
