N.Z. Taxation £2B Per Head
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. In the absence of the Minister for Finance (Mr. Nash) the Minister for Health (Mr. Nordmeyer) moved the second reading of the Land and Income Tax (annual) Bill in the House of Representatives last night. The Minister stated that as a result of the Third Liberty Loan having been oversubscribed, no increase in land and income taxes would be necessary and the bill simply reimposed existing rates. Mr. W. S. Goosman (Opp-Waikato), said he thought generally the people were glad there was no increase in taxation because they believed taxation had practically reached the limit in the Dominion. Mr. F. W. Doidge (Opp-Tauranga), said when the present Government had come into power taxation in New Zealand was £ls/18/4, whereas today it was £2B/17/9 per head, and this did not take into account one penny in war taxation. He made a plea for the pay as you go system of taxation. The debate was interrupted by the adjournment at 10 p.m., when the House rose.
