Took Car While Drunk, Ran Into Kerbing
Pleading guilty to charges of being in charge of a motor car while in an intoxicated state; and unlawful converison of a motor car, Abraham Pirihi, aged 20, was sentenced to a total of four months' imprisonment with hard labour by Mr Raymond Ferner. S.M., at Whangarei this morning. On the first charge he was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, arid on tlie second three months’ imprisonment, both with hard labour ad to be cumulative. Sergeant R. E. McGettigan said that last evening Pirihi took a car from the backyard of James’ Hotel and drove it along towards Maunu Road in an erratic manner at about 45 miles; per hour. The car mounted the footpath, narrowly missing a lady. The car turned over skidding to the other side of the road, and Pirihi was thrown out. He staggered about the road until the arrival of Constable H. A. G. Clements, and then attempted to run away, but was arrested. The estimated damage to the car was £IOO. Pirihi was overseas for 12 months, and returned to New Zealand on account of his age. In sentencing the accused Mr Ferner remarked that this was not the first time Pirihi had been before the court.
