League Of Mothers

Inclement weather affected the ft tendance at the monthly meeting of the League of Mothers, held cn June 17. but a successful gathering resultel. The president, Mrs. Inkster, led the opening devotional service, and the league hymn. "O Happy Home.” was sung. Colonel Duncan, chaplain to the Forces, was speaker for the afternoon, his subject being “The Decline in Birthrate as Affecting the British Empire, and Especially That of New Zealand.” The padre gave a comprehensive account of his stewardship to the members of the forces —husbands, sons, sweethearts—and of the help given by the units’ educational officers and the mobile library service. He set before the members the essence of his lectures to these men relating to the diminishing population. “Prosperity and population go hand in hand, for industry and purchasing prwer. arc- creating help for each other,” said the speaker. The economic, medical. social and psychological aspects of family life were spoken of. It was a question of sacrifice of self or nation. Far better for New Zealand to have a large population of its own, rather titan to arrange fer immigrants to solve our land and industrial problems. Mrs. Burns delighted members with two eclgs. Her accompanist was Mrs. Farkes.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Colonel Duncan for his able and interesting address, and to Mrs. Burns and the tea hostesses. Mesdames Green and Timowell.
