Mr. W. J. Dodd has taken up his duties as stationmaster at Waiotira, which has recently been raised a grade. For the previous 12 months he had been stationmaster at Kawakawa.

The death is announced of Karl Landsteiner, whose discovery oi classification of human blood into four main groups paved the way for blood transfusions which have saved scores of thousands of lives.

The death has occurred of Mi Lionel MacKenzie, aged 66, whose father founded the “Northern Luminary” at Kawakawa, and was also well-known in Whangarei newspaper work. Mr MacKenzie, junior, was on the staff of the “Taumaranui Fress,” ana was secretary of the King Country Rugby Union. Mrs E. Doel, of Kawakawa, is a sister. The Governor-General received Major-General J. L. Collins, of the ■United States Army, this afternoon. Lieut.-General Sfr Bernard Rreyberg, V.C., has left Government House.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) has announced the arrival in New Zealand of Commodore W. K. D. Dowding. D.S.C., R.N., to relieve Commodore E. Rotherham, R.N., as naval officer in charge of Auckland district. Commodore Rotherham has completed his term of service with the Royal New Zealand Navy and will return to Britain.

Mr C. McKinnon, formerly Mangonui county clerk, Kaitaia, is visiting his daughter, Mrs W. E. Denni's Kauika Road, Whangarei. He is accompanied by his son, Mr B. McKinnon.

Mr B. O’Donoghue. for the past 14 years District Public Trustee at Whangarei, has received advice of his appointment on promotion as District Public Trustee, Wanganui. Mr O’Donoghue will be leaving Whangarei in the course of the next few weeks.
