“Goatskin Express” Brings Petrol To Chungking
CHUNGKING. June 27. The “Goatskin Express” floated into Chungking yesterday, carrying over. 30 tons of petroleum products from Shensi. The arrival inaugurated the first largescale use of one of China’s most ancient forms of transport. The express comprised 1000 inflated goat skins subdivided into three large rafts which were dismantled and deflated for return to their starting point. The rafts were floated down the Chialing. which flows into the Yangtse at Chungking. The rafts, drawing less than one foot of water, carried 168 barrels of petroleum over the rapids and rockstrewn Chialing. The consignment’s transport cost 10,000 American dollars, which is cheaper than trucking.
