Release Of Men From Home Defence Amy
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. As a result of Saturday’s announcement, many inquiries have been received from employers regarding the release of men, said the Prime Minister last night. Mr. Fraser explained that on account of time required for the reorganisation of the home defence army, the selection of men for overseas service, and the transfer of men from the army to the navy and air force, there would be some unavoidable delay in releasing any large number for industry. Examination of Establishments Army authorities are examining establishments with the object of reducing to a minimum the number of men retained on full-time service, and joint committees of army ard air force officers will interview applicants for the air force.
When, this work has been completed, men not required further in the armed forces will be released. In this connection, the army authorities will work in close co-opera-tion with manpower officers to ensure that men released are placed on work f national importance and employed according to their skill and general suitability. Request to Employers
Mr. Fraser said it was essential that the service authorities should be given a short period in which to n.ake the readjustments rendered necessary by the recent decision of the War Cabinet. Employers were therefore requested to refrain from pressing unduly for the immediate release of men. Employers should make known their requirements to the local manpower officer so that he will have full information as to the class of tradesmen, etc., required by the various employers.
