In Territorial Waters
Issuing a stern warning that any person convicted of deliberately breaking the regulations regarding the movement of craft in waters within territorial limits will not receive lenient treatment was issued in the Whangarei Police Court today by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M. The "warning resulted from a case brought against Joseph Marsh, for moving an 18-foot mullet boat in such waters after sunset and before sunrise. Marsh pleaded guilty. Sergeant McGettigan said Marsh brought his boat to the vicinity of Bream Head and intended to return before dark but the engine broke down. He was therefore unable to return until 11 p.m. and he narrowly averred coming into collision with a patrol boat. The magistrate, in inflicting a fine of 20/- and costs, said it must be taken as a warning in this case. He wished that publication be given to the fact that the authorities were entitled to be supported in enforcing the regulations. Crgft moving, such as this, must cause a lot of anxiety to the authorities. He wished it to be clearly understood that any person convicted for deliberately breaking these regulations will not receive lenient treatment.
