Best batsman for South Brigade in its tilt with North Brigade was'the Papatoetoe, Dunedin and South Canterbury veteran, Dr. Valentine, who was later selected to captain the team at Eden Park. Going in first, he was at the crease for nearly two-and-a-half hours for his 56 which included oqly four boundaries. He made many pretty placements against a fairly strong attack, a fast outfield yielding full value for every stroke. Valentine was finally run out after a chanceless display. Fifth bowler tried. McLeod, the Whangarei colt, who sent them along fairly fast, took five for 11. Sgt. Andrews, who made 22 neatly, bad claims for selection as batsman-keeoer, but was passed over in favour of Dvr Morris, whose performance behind the

stumps in the other game was particularly fine.

North Brigade lost by 15 runs on the first innings after their opening batsmen, Armstrong and King, had made a stand of 50: Several of the North Brigade men were Auckland University players and most of the remainder were high-grade players from the city. Charlie Nisbet, the Whangarei representative, compiled a nice 15. For South Brigade Elliott.ia 11 overs took seven for 23. Of medium pace he kept a steady length and always had the batsmen on the defensive.
