Whangarei Competitions

Whangarei cricketers have been fortunate so far this year in week-end weather, and Saturday afternoon was no exception. There was little wind and the wickets were in splendid condition. Because many men were unavailable in some army teams, only two games took place at Kensington, one at School and one at Onerahi.

Keenly fought throughout, the match between Defence and Ambulance gave Defence a narrow margin of victory. Defence opened and immediately stepped out, batting being anything but iffy. Every reasonable chance was taken to build up the score and the hitting was exhilarating and incisive. Forster was a go-getter and several of his hits landed right out of the ground. Macßae and Hannam took most wickets and needed constant watching. Elannam, though scored off, was the most destructive.

Ambulance started well, and Defence’s fielding was good. It deteriorated fairly soon, but so did the batting. Hannam and Latto ran over the 20 in good style, beingfree and easy in action. Weston carried his bat for 12, and had he been able to face the bowling towards the finish might have saved the day for Ambulance, Codings, breaking them considerably, took seven wickets for 26, the best bowling of the match.

Defence: 104 (Forster 29. Bentley 17, Codings 16, Kent 13; Kannam 5 for 40, Macßae 2 for 13). Ambulance: 90 (Hannam 26, Latto 25, Deighton 12, Weston 12; Codings 7 for 26, Powell 3 for 17). SERVICES SUPERIOR With Holiday to the fore with 59, Services overran Central in the other Kensington match. Holiday formerly plaved lor Eden, and has one century to his credit this season. His batting was verv confident and sure, and until he reached the 50 he took no chances and offered no openings to the opposing bowlers. Ferguson finally scattered his wickets. Angell, who has also shown up this season, secured 17. Cole and Ferguson ran through the tail quickly after early punishment. The innings was a slow one, the full two hours elapsing for 142. Central were out in short time. Specchley, who took most of the overs with Meltzer. kept individual scoring below double figures. Central lacked a number of their usual plavers. Scores;— Services: 142 (Halidav 59, Angell 17, Meltzer 13. Spcechley 14; Cole 4 for 50, Ferguson 3 for 77).

Central: 40 (Speechley 6 for 25, Meltzer 3 for 15).

ALBION DEFEAT

Signallers opened smartly against Albion on the High School wicket. Mackie batted in finished, steady style. Clarke was just behind him with a well-earned 24. The attack was below the standard shown in some previous Albion matches.

Albion could only raise 53, Bull’s 17 no; out being the Top score. Mackie and Braund were in form with the ball.

Albion followed on to make a surprising .come-back. Only two wickets fell for 87. Massey and Jennings got into their swing. Scores:— Signallers; 108 (Mackie 25, Clarke 24, Crawley 16, Richard 13; Conway 2 for 12 Bull 3 for 28). ' Albion: 53 (Bull 17 not out, Jennings 15; Mackie 7 for 24, Braund 2 for 10); and 87 for two wickets (Massey 32, Jennings 23 not out). ALL OVER BY 5 P.M. Artillery were back in Whangarei by 5 p.m. after defeating Air Force. Artillery made 92 in a short time. Butler, who has batted consistently, once again led the list. Griffiths, who has not seen the limelight often before, compiled 24 not out. Mason was Air Force’s chief bowler, taking six wickets. Air Force possesses a good enough side, but were not able to compare with Artillery. Frist raked un 21. Arblaster, as usual, did a lot of damage and sent bails flying. Scores:—

Artillery: 92 (Butler 27, Griffiths not out 24; Mason G for 36).

'Air Force: G 4 (Prist 21; Arblaster G for 25, Blackie 3 for 10),
