Maungaturoto And Paparoa Service Car

The position in regard to supplies of rubber, especially motor tyres, was a serious one, said the No. 1 Licensing Authority (Mr E. J. Phelan), at Dargaville, and it was necessary to review some of the licenses operating in the district. Applications from operators regarding running times and fares were put before the authority.

The service conducted by Robert Salmon (Mr. Worsley) between Dargaville and Maungaturoto. should be co-ordinated with the railway in the opinion of Mr Phelan, and he would ask Mr Reid to effect negotiations with the operator regarding its' purchase. This applied also to the Dargaville- Paparoa run. conducted by Mr Pickard, who stated he had had no in-ox-e.se hi fares since ihe war started. Mr Worsley on behalf of Salmon asked for an increase of 4d a mile in single fares. Mr Phelan said he would consider the increase although it seemed rather high.

Service for Children

Mr Worsley said his client could, with a little adjustment, carry school children from Paparoa and HMatakohe to Ruawai High School. This would effect a saving of rubber used by a number of cars on the run today.

Mr Phelan said nothing would be done in this respect until negotiations between the railway and operator were finalised. Permission to run a taxi and bus service to Dargaville after the arrival of the 9 p.m. train at Maungaturoto and reinstatement of Wednesday running was sought.

These matters would be considered with the other requests, said Mr Phelan. In response to enquiries as to whether an operator could got authority to run special trips. Mr Phelan said this was forbidden, but if the special trip was of outstanding merit, application to his Auckland office would receive consideration.
