Fatal Fight About National Anthems

OTTAWA, Dec. 17

A fight between Canadian soldiers as to whether “God Save the King” or “O Canada” should be sung as the Dominion anthem resulted in the death of Private Grey Rodgers. At the inquest, it was stated that determined soldiers of Les Fusehers Mont Royal, who favoured “O Canada” and members of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, who wantel “God Save' the King” battled on Saturday night.

A brawl started when some soldiers at the closing time of the gathering, sang “Gcd Save the King”. A French Canadian remained seated and demanded the singing of “O Canada”. Both anthems were sung. The light went out and fighting began. A verdict of accidental death was returned after an inquiry into Roger’s death.
