Suggests Vatican Intervention For Persecuted Jews

Asked in the House of Commons If he* would approach the Vatican and Swedish and other neutral or nonbelligerent Powers with a view to their making representations to Germany respecting the treatment of Jews in Poland, and whether he would consider proposing to Sweden temporary migration of Polish Jews to Sweden under appropriate guarantees, including the supply of necessities by the United Nations, the Foreign Secretary (Mr. Anthony Eden) replied that it would be for the Governments directly concerned to begin negotiations ' for putting forward any such proposals if they thought it useful to do so. War Crimes Answering another question, Mr. Eden said that discussions were nowproceeding with Allied and Dominion Governments regarding the setting up of . a United Nations’ Commission for investigating war crimes. Britain was making arrangements for information regarding war crimes against British subjects to be submitted to the commission. No doubt other Governments concerned were making their own arrangements with regard to war crimes against their nationals.

Asked if the British Government, in consultation with the United States and the Soviet, were preparing a common programme of post-war economic co-operation to carry into effect the objectives of the Atlantic Charter, Lease-Lend agreement and AngloRussian agreement, Mr. Eden replied that though no negotiations at present were in progress, the Government had every intention of working with others of the United Nations toward such a common programme. British Labour’s Protest

Describing Germany’s avowed aim to wipe out the Jews as history’s bloodiest crime, the Labour Party executive has appealed “to the conscience of civilised mankind to arise in passionate protest.” The statement urges Germany’s A 1 lies “to refuse further complicity in this monstrous policy,” and adds: “We appeal to all who still have power and influence in Europe to at least make an effort to save the children. The homes of Jewish men and women are being broken up and their families scattered, deported and taken in enslavement and driven to death b.v hunger and cold and tortured and murdered with calculated, pitiless, scientific savagery. There is ample; evidence that this crime is methodic ally organised and is being carried out with such thoroughness and persist ence that, within a short time, Jews within the frontiers of the German New Order in Europe will be exterminated.”
