Radio Sets In Schools

The Auckland Education Board’s request that secondary departments of the district high schools should observe the same holidays as seedndary and technical schools was declined in a memorandum from the department. It stated that owing to war conditions only urgent amendments to the existing regulations could be considered; therefore no action could be taken at present. Child delinquency was again discussed. The board decided to renew its request that tho Minister for Education (Mr Mason.) meet it in conference. The Minister had previously refused their invitation. A reply from the Education Department to the board’s inquiry whether definite action had been taken to allow grants to schools to purchase necessary equipment, such as pianos, radios and sewing machines, stated that the departmenl was considering draft amendments to the regulations with a view to broadening the scope for which grants might be used. The department. however, was not in a position to say that pianos and radios would be included as authorised items of expenditure.

Members pointed out that these were the principal items, and Mr J. Patterson said that radios were essential, especially as the department had a special radio programme for school children. Mr A. Burns pointed out that radios were particularly necessary for small country schools. Tin- board decided to renew its request.
