Wallace Beery Stars In “Barnacle Bill” At Plaza
AMUSEMENTS
With Wallace Beery in a role which fits him like a glove and Marjorie Main, the rasD-voiced comedienne, in the principal supporting role, "Barnacle Bill,” which oDened at the Plaza Theatre last night, is as enjoyable a comedy as seen for a long time. Cast as the owner of a small fishing vessel too lazy to work, Beery is a tough waterfront ne’er-do-well continually scheming against his creditors and trying to wheedle money out of Miss Main, the equally tough owner of a general store. When a daughter whom he has not seen since babyhood arrives and claims him, his scheming takes a jolt. Endeavouring to reform from his drunken habits, he goes to church, but immediately afterwards goes into a saloon. One adventure follows another as his boat is scuttled, he works on a fishing boat and eventually buys a schooner.
Fights, laughter and a touch of heartinterest make the film always entertaining, and there will be few who will not enjoy every moment. The supporting cast includes Leo Carillo, Donald Meek and Virginia Weidler. An excellent programme of short features supports the .main attraction.
