An Expensive Glass
A glass, valued at 9d, cost Graham Roberts, of Ahipara, £2 when he was convicted of stealing one drinking glass the property of Norman Keith Boyd, licensee of the Kaitaia Hotel. Roberts pleaded guilty.
Sgt. Simister stated that on Friday, January 23, Constable Agnew, in the course of hjs duty, sooke to Roberts in the hotel and advised him to leave the bar as he had had enough drink. The constable noticed something bulky in Roberts’ pocket and when questioned about it Roberts produced the glass. He admitted taking it but did not know why "The taking of glasses was a verv common complaint at local hotels and' was a constant worry and expense to the licensee,” Sgt. Simister said. Mr Ferner: The purloining of glasses is just plain theft. The present difficulty in getting replacements makes it even more serious. If this practice doesn't stop, the penalty, already severe, will be not less than £5.
