Manpower Appeals

Appeals considered by the Manpower Committee at Whangarei included one in respect of a farm labourer and two in respect of newspaper employees. Frederick A. Draffin, farmer, Mangapai, appealed for the services of William McLean Palmer, who had been working' with him for three days. Draffin farmed lOC acres carrying 50 dairy cows. He had a son aged 18 who was likely to be called in the next territorial ballot. The appeal was dismissed. The Northern Publishing Company, Ltd., appealed in respect of a reporter, Douglas R. Purser. Postponement for three months was requested so that further efforts could be made to replace Purser. The managing director (Mr. B. W. Crawford), for the company, stated Purser had enlisted at the outbreak of war and was anxious to serve. He was graded class 11. 50 Per Cent. Reduction It was pointed out to the committee that previously four reporters had been eraj ployed and their numbers were reduced to two. The postponement was granted and the appeal was accordingly dismissed on condition that Purser was not called I up before March 31. 1 An appeal for the services of a linotype operator, Joseph C. Hardy, was also (lodged by the Northern Publishing ComI pany. Ltd. Mr. Crawford stated that Hardy had enlisted at Invercargill some time ago, and had been graded 11. Linotype operating was a specialised job, and operators were key men in newspaper offices. Efforts made to secure operators had not met with any success. The appeal was adjourned until March 22.
