North May Get Steel Supplies From States
The possibility of a supply of reinforced steel being made available from the United States was mentioned in a letter from an engineering firm received at the monthly meeting of the North Auckland Electric-power Board in Dargaville yesterday. The firm advised that the possibility of a supply from the United States was being discussed with the Minister for Supply and the board would be advised of any progress made. A letter from another firm acknowledged receipt of the board's indent order for a supply oT steel but: stated that owing to the conditions ruling it was unable to confirm the order or give any indication of deliveryi. A third firm advised that it had received a letter from the Electricity Controller advising that he had requested the New South Wales Forestry Commission and the Commonwealth Controller of Timber to endeavour to arrange priority of supply and shipping of poles under order by the board. In his report to the board the engineer (Mr. T. R. Overton) stated that the delivery of ironbarlc poles from Australia was still problematical but the most recent letter gave some hope of receiving a small quantity at an early date.
