Meningitis Death At Auckland

[Special to "Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND. This Day

When the 17-months-old daughter cf Mr. and Mrs. Trevor N. Foote, of Gunson Street, Ponsonby, was admitted to the Auckland Hospital on Wednesday evening, the medical staff diagnosed the case as spinal meningitis. The child died within four hours, this being the first death of this kind in Auckland since the mild epidemic was reported from the North some months ago. The chairman of the hospital board (Mr. Moody) said today that, after consultation, the medical superintendent (Dr. Gilmour) had done everything possible to save the child’s life. The history of the case showed that ihe child had been suffering from bronchitis.

The Health Department stated today that meningitis cases occurred which were not of an epidemic class. “People should not be scared because cases appear to be exactly the same as the epidemic variety.” an officer of the department said.
