Troops Applauded On March Through Auckland

[Special to “Northern Advocate”] AUCKLAND, This Day

Between lanes of applauding Aucklanders, reinforcements marched through the city today, led by the Papakura Camp Band, and accompanied by other bands at intervals. Marching in compact columns of sixes, the troops made a fme showing, especially the infantry, wearing drill order, with arms and haversacks, their fixed bayonets glinting in the sunshine. The bearing of the Maori reinforcements called forth enthusiastic bursts of applause throughout the whole route. The salute was taken at the Town Hall by Brigadier Bell, Officer Commanding Northern Command, and he was attended by the Mayor (Mr. Allum), and Mr. P. K. Paikea, representing the Government. The troops later entrained for Papakura. Wellington’s Public Interest A Wellington message says keen public interest was manifestetd in the parade of 2200 troops from Trentham when they assembled at the railway station this morning, and through the city. The salute was taken by the Governor-General 'Sir Cyril Newall). With him were the actingprime Minister (Mr. Nash), and other members of Cabinet. Burnham Troops March A parade of troops from Burnham was held in Christchurch. The men appeared fit and well, their marching and general bearing reflecting the result of efficient training. It was a parade similar to many that have been seen in the city in the past 18 months, but on this occasion the crowds lining the footpaths along the route of the march were smaller than' usual.
