Portland
The 22ncl annual meeting of the Portland Welfare League was held on May 20. The attendance was fair. The chairman (Mr. R. Potter) was in the chair. The balance-sheet showed a balance in hand of £lO4/5/11, which was very satisfactory indeed. The billiard saloon and picture theatre were the most successful assets financially. On the motion of Mr. Gower, seconded by Mr. Davies, a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded the chairman and committee for their efforts to improve the township and its surroundings. Messrs. Gower and Copeland put forward a recommendation that the league donate £lO towards presents for local boys overseas, and that they assist in every way possible in this matter. The chairman thanked the secretary and committee for their work throughout the year. Mr. Gower moved, and Mr. Davies seconded, a vote of great appreciation to the Welfare League secretary (Mr. Lofts). As the chairman remarked, no one knew the amount of work Mr. Lofts did in connection with the league. Mr. Lofts thanked the members for their remarks, and assured them of his loyal services always. Election
The new committee is: Messrs. R. Potter, A. P. Copeland, G. A. Lindsay, R. Pearce, D. Lorimer, C. Covacich, H. Gordon, Pink, Foster, Nicholson, Priestly, W. Purchase and Lofts (secretary).
