Gallant New Zealand Airmen Win Awards

(Rec. 1 p.m.) LONDON, May 26. The citations have been issued regarding the award of the D.F.C. to Flight-Lieutenant W. S. Rea, of Paengaroa, and Flying-Officer A. A. Gawith, of Masterton. The former, it is stated, since the outbreak of war has flown a considerable number of hours day and night under all conditions of weather and is a most able flying-boat captain, carrying out his allotted tasks with resource and skill. He set an excellent example.

Flying-Officer Gawith has been employed with a squadron since last April and, since the outbreak, has carried out numerous operational flights, including convoy escorts, often in bad weather. On other occasions he has carried out attacks on aerodrome buildings, bombing from a low altitude in the face of heavy ground fire. Throughout he has displayed great zeal and determination.
