The Lucky Girl

Meva was disappointed, for she had no silver dancing slippers for the concert. She would not be able to dance as her mother couldn’t afford a new pair of slippers, and her old ones were blue, not silver as was the order. There was not a more disappointed girl in the world. As she slowly wandered homewards she saw a purse on the pavement and opening it, she discovered it belonged to Miss Kaye, the dancing mistress. She hurried along to the lady’s home. “Thank you, Meva,” said Miss Kaye. “I am so relieved. Oh, Meva, one of the girls told me you would not be dancing tomorrow evening. How is that?”

Meva, very much upset, told her troubles to the sympathetic Miss Kaye. “Now Meva,” said Miss Kaye, “you come along early and bring your blue slippers with you.” Meva went wonderingly home very joyful that her troubles were finished, for she had utmost faith in Miss Kaye.

A very excited little girl peeped out from behind the curtains, as Miss Kaye announced that Meva Laine would not sing as was on the programme. Half the items had finished and Miss Kaye was again on the stage announcing the surprise item. Ten little dancers trouped on. to the stage; nine stood in a row with the tenth leading them. And as the band struck up they danced. Nine were in silver but the tenth, none other than Meva, was all in blue. The dancing finished. Meva stepped on to the edge of the stage and danced a solo tap, and sang a song. How the crowd cheered and encored the item. When Meva went home, tired but happy, she was clutching a lovely bouquet of roses. Stella Turketo, Onerahi. Aged 14. (Original).
