Torpedo Landed On 10,560-Ton Ship’s Deck

As the 10,500-ton Glasgow-built motor-ship Orari (well known in New Zealand waters) zig-zagged to evade attack, a U-boat surfaced 100 yards away and fired a torpedo which hit the Orari and sent up a 60ft. column of water. Then it was seen that the torpedo had been deposited on the poop. Though listing badly, the Orari put out a smoke screen and escaped further damage. As she made off, neither captain nor crew knew whether the ship would founder; but they succeeded in reaching port. The story was told in court when it became known that the Government had awarded £SOO to the master and crew for outstanding services.
