Louis Knocked Through Ropes, But Still Champ.
WASHINGTON, May 25
Joe Louis retained his world’s heavyweight boxing title in a match With Buddy Baer, who was unable to answer the bell at the start of the seventh round. - -
Louis was knocked through the ropes in the first round, but was back in the ring at the count of four. Thereafter he completely outclassed the challenger. Baer was sent to the canvas twice in the sixth round. He had just risen as the'referee was reaching the count of ten, when the bell rang. Louis apparently did not hear the bell, due to the roar of a crowd of 40,000. He landed a terrific right which knocked Baer unconscious.
The referee (Mr. Donovan) said that the last blow landed before the bell, but most observers did not agree with this opinion. While Baer was unable to answer the bell the referee disqualified him.
