German Penetration In French Morocco

(Rec. Noon) RUGBY, May 22. German penetration into French Morocco continues, apparently under the general direction of the German commission established there.

These commissions operate *in sections. There is one naval and one military control commission, and the other is industrial and economic.

It is noteworthy that the majority of the personnel are military officers, who appear to suffer from no lack of cars, petrol and money. Meanwhile, there is a fairly constant infiltration of “tourists,” who have already succeeded in exercising a certain amount of authority. The German ‘Tourist”

A cable message says that Germany is using “tourist” methods to obtain dominant positions in French Morocco. It is considered that General Weygand must be aware of this influx, which appears to be outside any of the published armistice terms. It must be assumed that the Germans are in a position to assert their influence in almost every department of the administration, particularly in regard to airfields. French Tanker Intercepted

British naval patrols picked up the French oil tanker Scheherazade in the Atlantic carrying a cargo of oil from a United States port to Casablanca. British authorities granted the ship a navicert some time ago, but, because of recent developments in Vichy’s attitude, decided to take action.
