Free French Planes Over Ethiopia

LONDON, May 22.

Side by side with the Royal Air Force, the Free French Sudan squadron has for two months daily taken part in operations in Abyssinia, says a British Official Wireless message.

It took part in the bombardment of Debra Marcos and Bahardar, and more recently has been engaged in the Lake Tsana region, especially at Gondar and Chilga. Describing one action, a French flight-lieutenant, who fought in France until just before the armistice, said: “We have just completed the first flight over Gondar aerodrome, dropping two bombs on to the hangar. “An Italian C.R.42 headed straight for us. I made for the clouds, but the C.R.42 gave chase. “Our plane was peppered with' tracer bullets. I banked suddenly, and the enemy came within range of the machine-gunner. A long burst went straight into the enemy’s engine, and we saw him crash on rough ground.”
