If' Paratene te Manu The ancestral home of this fierce old warrior and his Ngati-Wai tribe was the Little Barrier Island —now a bird sanctuary. His tribe was a branch of the warlike Ngapuhi, and old Paratene took part in many savage raiding expeditions and cannibal feasts throughout all parts of the Auckland Province. In 1862 Paratene, with a number of other prominent chiefs, went on a trip to England, where he met and talked to Queen Victoria. With his fighting days behind him, Paratene spent a peaceful old age, dying at Ngunguru in 1896.
