Failed To Register For Military Service

Failing to appear to answer a charge of neglecting, when a member of the first division under the National Service Emergency Regulations, to apply for enrolment, Richard William Roberts, 27, single, formerly of Whangarei, was fined £l2, with 10/- costs in the Whangarei Court today. Constable F. W. Higgins gave evidence of having interviewed Roberts, under instructions from the Director of National Service. Roberts had admitted he was not registered, but later he had completed the enrolment form. Roberts was an Australian, and had said he had not known it was compulsory for him to register until shortly before the police interviewed hirn. He had stated that he had called at the post office and had been told no forms were available, and had been advised to see the military authorities, who had referred him back to the post office. From inquiries made, forms had been available at the pos' office. The effect of the prosecution would be that Roberts would be liable to be called for service in the next Gazette, said the magistrate (Mr. Raymond Ferner). The case was not so serious as some with which he had dealt.
