Road Votes To Be Cut

The Mnngonui County Council, at Its meeting recently, received from the Public Works Department, a letter dealing with road votes for 194041. The letter stated that there would be considerably less money this year, and only those works of a most urgent nature, having regard to settlement needs and the- desire of the Govrnment to increase primary production, could be entertained. At the end of March, 1940, there were financial commitments against the road vote, and these would be a first charge against the allocation next year. The Mangonui County Council held monetary authority for a number of works on which there were no commitments, and may wish to revise its reading programme so that available moneys could be devoted to the works . of most importance from a national point of view. The co-op-eration of the council was invited to this end. It was proposed to cancel the authorities for the following works: Carton’s Road, £36 17/7 (£3 for £1) and Churton’s Road, £7OO (free). Cr. Matthews moved that the council strongly urge the retention of the vote for Churton’s Road’. The work would have been completed 18 months ago had there not been delay due to transfers of land. Two dairy herds were being milked along the road. The chairman, Mr Smith, informed me that the votes for new formation would be heavily cut, but there was a chance of getting money for new' bridges. The motion was seconded by Cr. Hoskin and carried. At the suggestion of Cr. McKay, a decision on Garton’s Road was held over. It was the duty of the council, said Cr. McKay, to assist the Government in its patriotic economies. Cr. Holder urged that the Waihoe Road travelled through good country, and led to the small farm settlement in the Kaitaia Swamp.
