Alien Women Interned On Isle Of Man
LONDON, May 27. The Home Secretary (Sir John Anderson) has authorised the temporary internment of all Austrian and German women throughout Britain between the ages of 16 and 60, who hitherto were compelled only to comply with the special restrictions. These women are being interned on the Isle of Man, off the south-west coast of Scotland. They are allowed to take children under 16 with them. Over 1000 have been rounded up in London. The order affects 3300 in Britain, including many Glasgow and Sheffield residents. Also detained are the husbands of many internees already interned. The Government has taken over the whole port of Erin, in southern Isle of Man, for the internment of the women aliens, who will be billeted in hostels and boarding-houses, the proprietors of which must cater for them. So much per capita will be paid by the Government. Barbed wire and a military guard will encircle the town, leaving the women the use of the beach, tennis courts, etc.
