Gildo Too Good For Caltaux
BOXING
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day. In .a professional catchweight contest of 12 three-minute rounds between Young Gildo, the Filipino lightweight, and Vic. Caltaux, New Zealand welterweight champion, in the Town Hall last night, Gildo won on points. Gildo was far too clever for his New Zealand opponent, to whom he conceded almost a stone in weight. The first four rounds were fairly evenly contested, although it was clear at the early stages that Gildo was too clever for an opponent who was willing to mix matters. From the fourth round onward Gildo was master of the situation, and, except for occasional bursts by his opponent, he scored points consistently whenever he.chose to attack Caltaux with both hands to the body or head. More than once Caltaux was sent reeling against the ropes, and it was only his strength and pluckiness that carried him. through to the end. Gildo weighed 9st. 5 Jib., and Caltaux lOst. 41b.
