Jap. War Chief Calls For Greater National Effort
(Received 12.30 p.m.) TOKIO. May 9. The War Minister (Mr Hata) warned at the Gubernatorial Conference that it was impossible to predict the outcome of the world war. It was unlikely that the world crisis would soon be dispelled. “The situation abroad and at home is so serious that our national existence is at stake, and therefore national effort must he redoubled in order to fulfill our divine destiny.” The Prime Minister (Admiral Yonai). on May 2, reaffirmed Japan’s noninvolvement in the European war. He said that Japan was determined to act independently and cope with developments arising from the war or the general situation. He added that there were many difficulties at home and abroad, before Japan could obtain her objectives, which necessitated the lengthy maintenance of general mobilisation.
