20 Tons Of Explosives Fired At Portland
Providing a spectacular display, 20 tons of explosives were fired at Portland shortly after 1 p.m. today at the quarry of Messrs. Wilsons (N.Z.) Portland Cement, Ltd.
The blast was estimated to bring down between 200,GC0 and 300,000 tons of rock, which, under normal working, will last about two years.
Four months were spent in preparing the blast. Although not the largest that has been fired at the Portland quarry, the blast was one of the largest fired in the Southern Hemisphere, and provided a spectacular display for a crowd iof spectators at the works, and for residents watching from their homes. The concussion was not greatly noticeable owing to the depth at which the explosives had been placed.
