Dutch Girl Arrives To Marry Dutch Boy At Petone
[Special to “Northern Advocate.”] AUCKLAND, This Day. A Dutch girl who is to marry a Dutch boy at St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Petone, on Saturday, May 18, arrived in Auckland today. The romance started in Holland. The prospective bridegroom is Mr. G. Veldwyk, who came to Auckland to meet his bride, Miss A. Metz. Mr. Veldwyk arrived in New Zealand in June as one of five carpenters selected as an advance guard of the migration scheme sponsored by the Dutch and New Zealand Governments. He has been employed on State building projects. Although the carpenters made good, the scheme is unlikely to be extended until after the war. Miss Metz was the only passenger on the ship for New Zealand and was at first unable to speak a word of English. “So you see I had plenty of chances to learn. I had no choice but to speak English,” she said, with only a slight trace of accent. ''
