Rugby Season Opens
THE Rugby football season in Whangarei opened this afternoon, and it is good to hear that the prospects of a successful season are bright. Rugby is being played in the shadow of war, which will inevitably affect the general situation, for, in the very nature of things, younger players will be in the forefront this year. The war has already claimed a number of senior players who have forsaken the football .jersey for the military uniform, and more will undoubtedly follow. For this reason, the season may prove of more real value than it would probably have done, young players being given an opportunity, which would otherwise have been denied them, of taking part in senior play. The general effect upon the future of football should therefore be marked. It is noteworthy that the League code has ceased to operate in Whangarei. A pleasing feature of this code’s existence'was the cordial relations which existed between it and Rugby. It is very pleasing to know that the assimilation of players of the two codes is taking place in happy fashion.
