Italian Charge Against Allies
LONDON, April 29. Signor Virginio Gayda, in “La Voce d’ltalia,” accuses the Allies of inspiring a Slovene manifesto, which demanded the return of Trieste to Yugoslavia. Italy has called up the 1906 class of conscripts, while four other classes will be called up soon. The Italian Ambassador in London (Signor Bastiani) saw the Foreign Secretary (Viscount Halifax) at the weekend. Friendly Talk. A very friendly discussion took place when the Italian Ambassador called on Viscount Halifax on Friday, the main object being to consider the resumption of economic negotiations between the two countries. It is hoped later that officials, will be sent to Rome to continue the negotiations suspended last February. . It is impossible to divorce the question of contraband from any wartime discussion dealing with trade between belligerent and non-belligerent countries, but Britain is anxious to meet any point of difficulty which Italy can reasonably bring to her notice. It is understood a British trade delegation may shortly visit Rome, as a result of the conversation between Lord Halifax and Signor Lastianini. Pro-German Envoy for Berlin. A Rome message says the Italian Ambassador to the Vatican (Signor Dino Affieri), has been appointed Ambassador to Berlin. He is considered to be strongly pro-German. Exchanging with Signor Affieri, Signor Bernardo Attolico has been appointed Italian Ambassador to the Vatican. He has been Ambassador to Germany since 1935.
