Nazi Bombers Attack Rod Cross Ship
(Received 2 p.m.) LONDON, April 20. THREE GERMAN BOMBERS, LEADING A CONVOY OF 60 AIR TRANSPORTS, SAVAGELY ATTACKED A RED CROSS SHIP BRINGING NORWEGIAN EVACUEES FROM OSTERDAL REGION TO SWEDEN. Eighteen men and four women tied into the woods, while a bomber swooped down and machine-gunned them.
Villages, Field Hospitals Targets. < A second bomber dropped a bomb 30 feet from the ambulances, and a third riddled ambulances with bullets. All ambulances prominently displayed the Red Cross. German planes bombed and machinegunned Norwegian trading and fishing ships along the coast, setting fire to one and sinking one. They also heavily bombed the hospital ship Brand. Fourth off Alesund, killing five, including a doctor, and injuring many. Air raids in the Steinkjaer area included widespread low-flying attacks on villages and field hospitals. Two children were killed in one village, where 50 bombs were dropped. Reports from Gothenburg states that British bombers are said to have destroyed a large oil tank during a raid on aerodromes near Oslo. German bombers paid particular attention to Allied troops south from Trondheim, where the Germans claim that their troops are within 25 miles of German forces coming from the south-east. • ~ ,
