Wholesale Grocery Merchants Busy
ISpecial to "Northern Advocate ”] AUCKLAND, This Day. Wholesale grocery merchants have been extremely busy during the past week —country business was exceptionally heavy on account of May 1 booking, commencing last Wednesday, and this, together with Anzac Day falling on the following day, made conditions for packing and despatch departments very busy indeed. Active trading in all departments is expected this week. Country orders are still heavy, and as town business commenced yesterday, merchants will have a very busy week. Baking; Powder Short. Supplies of southern brands of baking powder are still difficult to obtain in any quantity, with the result that as consignments arrive they are distributed immediately. An offer by a local packer of supplies for later in the year, with definite dates of delivery specified, is therefore creating some interest.
Safety matches supplies are still one of the major problems of both the wholesale trade and the retail, quantities available proving totally inadequate for the demand. Advice received that a further shipment of Australian has now come to hand is, therefore, particularly welcome news. It is probable that a small shipment of English will be available shortly. Primes Overcarried. Unfortunately, supplies of Californian carton prunes, which were due to arrive last week, and the offer of which was creating some interest, were overcarried to Sydney and will not be available until the middle of- next week. A very small shipment of English herrings in sauce arrived recently, and further shipments are expected very shortly. Items out of stock include certain brands and packs of honey. A well-known brand of cigarettes in all packings, a line of household lubricating oil (further supplies procurable about one month), a line of bottled general arid antiseptic in all sizes. Rat exterminators, vegetable extract in salt and pepper shakers, Condy’s crystals, English salt, etc.
