Mr. William Clever
OBITUARY
The death occurred in Whangarei yesterday of Mr William Clever. He was 75 years old. Mr Clever was brother of the late Mr Clement Cleaver. A bachelor, Mr Clever left Little River, Canterbury, over 40 years ago and for a short time farmed in the Gisborne district. Later he came to Whangarei and in 1904 took up a section In the Karaka Block, Parakao. He was one of the first to settle on the block and his first years were beset with the usual pioneering difficulties. All goods had to be packed from | Parakao. Mr Clever was instrumental in bringing expert fencers from the South .and he also imported many ship loads of fine sheep from Gisborne. Farm at Waipu. When he sold this property, Mr Clever bought a dairy farm at Waipu and was one of the original directors of the Waipu Dairy Company,* on the board of which he held office until 1918. He then retired to Ruakaka. Held in high esteem by all who knew him, Mr Clever was considered an authority on sheep and dairy farming and cropping. He was a member of the Waipu Masonic Lodge and also of the 1647 E.C. Star of the North, Whangarei. The funeral leaves Miller’s Mortuary for Maunu Cemetery at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
