Maori Woman, Reputed To Be 104, Dies

Mrs Agnes Witehira, reputed to be over 104 years of age, died in Kaikohe recently and has been buried in the Puhimoanariki Cemetery. Although Mrs Witehira had been bed-ridden for many years, her mind still remained alert and she had been able to recount in Maori interesting incidents of her early life. One happening she recalled had been her baptism as a child at the Waimate Church. As a Maori, she had been looked upon with great respect, the other Maoris regarding her as an aristocrat among them. In her younger days, she would sit outside the door of her whare smoking a pipe, and that, coupled with the tattoo on her face, made a perfect picture of the old-time Maori. Mrs Witehira leaves a very large family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
