Sink Party Politics, Doidge Urges

[Special to “Northern Advocate’’] TAURANGA, This Day. Speaking at the opening of the agricultural display at Katikati yesterday Mr F. W. Doidge, M.P., referred to the meeting of' the National Party caucus in Wellington, where, he said, a unanimous decision had been reached to sink party politics and get behind the Government in its war effort. “Germany makes war in pursuit of territorial expansion,” said Mr Doidge. Pledges to Motherland. “If Britain were to go down in this war our future in New Zealand Is obvious. “As one of the richest primary producing countries in the world, this Dominion would be a certain prize claimed by the victor from the vanquished. “In New Zealand we have given pledges to the Motherland. “We have pledged ourselves to maintain an overseas force. “We have pledged ourselves to maintain and even increase our supply of foodstuffs to Britain. “So far we have recruited 15,000 physically fit men. There are in New Zealand 200,000 men of age for military service. Need for United Effort. “The need for a united national effort is clear,” .continued Mr Doidge. This does not mean that every young farmer is expected to rush off to the nearest recruiting office. “On the contrary, the Government is as much concerned about production as it is about recruiting. "Ultimately, in my opinion, the issue in New Zealand will resolve itself into the simple alternative: ‘Farm or fight.’ “These are the two fronts on which manpower is needed. “Let us organise for victory on both.” EARLY SWIMMER’S RISK. “B-r-r-r!
